Lynne Hodgman

Artist’s Statement

My work is based on ideas of language and line.  I invent language symbols and use them in many mediums.  I learned to sew soon after I learned to write; so, for me, stitching and writing arise from the same mysterious transformative source.

I work with a variety of materials.  I rarely know what I will make until I start manipulating and exploring them. Thus, my drawings, paintings, sculptures, collages, and fiber installations may combine and integrate paper, fabric, thread, paint, and clay.

Much of my work is quiet and meditative; it can also be whimsical and playful.  It is almost always abstract.  It tells stories of process and composition, of its own making: marks on paper, knitting, sewing, weaving, molding, shaping, layering, attaching, constructing, puncturing, punctuating, altering and amending.  This kind of activity is universal and cross-cultural.  The art-maker imbues the process with meaning and the viewer interprets, supplements, or transcends that initial meaning.
