Biography

Lynne was born in Laconia, NH and received BA and MA degrees in Linguistics from Brown University, followed by a BFA in Painting from the University of Kansas. She has lived on both coasts and currently resides in San Diego, CA.

Her work uses language as its subject matter, usually in abstract, non-representational modes. Her materials include paper, fiber, metal, and clay; her forms may indirectly reference nature or the body. She invents much of the language she uses, with no correspondence to existing alphabets. Each character Glyph is unique, and takes a form that changes its qualities according to its medium.

Because of both academic and career experience in mathematics and technology, Lynne often presents work that considers the tension of juxtaposed order and chaos: grids with organic marks, free gesture with controlled design. Language and mathematics each create material conventions for describing abstract ideas that are reflected in Lynne's constructions.

Lynne has shown her work at venues in the Midwest, Arizona, California, and China, is included in corporate and private collections, and is involved in several local art communities. She was a founding member of an artists' discussion group as well as an active docent at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. Lynne is a member of California Fibers.
